I am on an inspiration high right now. As luck would have it, I found out that Philip Sayce was going to be playing Cadillac Zack's blues jam at Malarkey's in Long Beach. The last time that he did a show at The Mint in LA I wasn't able to go. So when I saw the post on FB that he would be performing live on June 1st, I did whatever I could to make it. It was an amazing opportunity to see him in a small venue.

What an unbelievable show! I never saw Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan do a live show, but seeing Philip play made me feel as if I was watching the greats. So much energy, power, passion and heart. The whole band had an amazing presence. They commanded the audiences attention and the sound was just a jaw dropping, kick ass explosion of blues rock heaven. I love this quote by Sayce because I definitely feel he practices what he preaches: “My goal is to try to put as much of myself emotionally and even physically into everything I sing and play,” Sayce says. “That’s something I learned from the great records I heard as a kid to every minute I spent on stage with Jeff Healey, Melissa Etheridge and Uncle Kracker. They really put themselves in the center of their music, and when audiences recognize that, something amazing happens. A whole new level of communication and connection takes place. That’s what I’m always going for.”

A special moment of the night for me was when Philip played Alchemy in the first set. This song is really special to me because it is the first song that I learned on guitar on my own from beginning to end. I play it everyday in my practice sessions to stir up my soul and play what I feel from the heart.

Philip was also really gracious to talk to his fans in-between sets and I was very happy to meet him. I took photos of him during the show (below) and I was able to get a shot with him as well. Hopefully one day in the near future I will play with him at some show, somewhere, somehow. And if you haven't heard of Philip Sayce, I am including a youtube vid of Philip playing the next night at Cadillac Zack's Monday blues jam in Tarzana.
